IDC: Samsung widens lead over Apple in Q2, Nokia continues to fall

IDC Smartphone Shipments Q2 2012

A recent study by market research firm, IDC revealed that the smartphone market grew 42.1% in the second quarter of 2012, while the worldwide mobile phone market grew just 1% year-over-year. Smartphone vendors shipped 153.9 million handsets in the second quarter of 2012, compared to 108.3 units in the second quarter of 2011. That's an interesting number!

Samsung (005930) extended its lead over Apple (AAPL) during the second quarter — thanks to the launch of its flagship Galaxy S III smartphone and the continued success of its Galaxy Note phablet, the vendor was able top the 50 million unit mark, shipping 50.2 million handsets and reach a new quarterly smartphone shipment record. The South Korean manufacturer’s smartphone shipments grew a whopping 172.8% year-over-year and helped the company capture 32.6% of the market. There's no stopping Sammy!

Samsung’s closest rival, Apple, benefited from offering of the iPhone through smaller regional carriers and prepaid service providers, which helped the Cupertino-based company move 26 million units and capture 16.9% of the market. Apple, there's Nokia in the hell. Waiting for you.

“Samsung and Apple have quickly become the global smartphone heavyweights though both employ somewhat different approaches to the market,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. “Samsung employs a ‘shotgun’ strategy wherein many models are created that cover a wide range of market segments. Apple, in contrast, offers a small number of high-profile models. While both companies have expanded their geographic presence in pursuit of market share, the two companies will inevitably come into greater conflict as both try to generate additional gains.”

Nokia (NOK) continued its decline as sales of Symbian and MeeGo smartphones fell, and its Lumia Windows Phone handsets fail to reach success. Windows Phone, you know... The Finnish company shipped 10.2 million units in the second quarter, a 38.9% year-over-year decline, dropping its market share from 15.4% to 6.6%.

Troubled handset-maker HTC (2498) was able to rebound slightly in the second quarter and reclaimed the No.4 spot in the smartphone vendor rankings. The company’s strong performance in the Asia/Pacific region and growing popularity of its One-series of smartphones helped the vendor ship 8.8 million devices and capture a 5.7% market share.

ZTE (000063) was right on HTC’s heels, and for the first time ever made an appearance in the top-five. The company’s low-cost entry-level smartphones have found success in China and helped the manufacturer’s shipments increase 300% year-over-year to 8 million units, which amounted to a 5.2% market share.
